While floral print dresses and pastels are a great choice for weddings, bold colours and bright hues are also perfect, especially for spring and summer time weddings. From bold and bright primary and secondary colours to jewel tones, choose the best colour for your outfit with colour theory in mind.
What is colour theory?
Colour theory is the understanding of colours, how they interact, combine, and affect perception. Colour theory is most often used in design and art, but is also essential in fashion and styling. Colour theory can assist with choosing colours that complement each other when styling an outfit. Colour theory can also help you choose colours to suit your skin tone. When exploring colour theory and colours, it is essential to reference the colour wheel.
The Colour Wheel
Primary colours are red, blue and yellow while secondary colours are created from mixing two of the primary colours, and these are purple, orange and green. Tertiary colours are further colour combinations, which are made by mixing a primary colour with a secondary colour, for example teal, amber and magenta.
The colours on the colour wheel can also be organised by warm vs cool. Red, orange and yellow tones are considered warm colours while green, blue and purple colours are cool tones.
The Colour Wheel & Styling
Colours on opposition side of the colour wheel, for example blue and orange, are known as complementary colours. Complementary colours are contrasting and create a bold colour combination. The colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, such as blue and green, are analogous colours. When paired together these colours create a harmonious look. Monochromatic colours are the same colour in different hues, for example red and pink.
When you style a monotone outfit it can create a bold and dramatic statement which is perfect for a black tie wedding, a formal wedding or even a garden wedding.
Bold Colours For Wedding Guests
Red
Paint the town red with a gorgeous red gown for your next wedding guest look. Red is a great option for when you want to be bold, and this shade is best suited to those with warm skin and dark hair, but we do believe red is a neutral and most shades of it look good on every kind of skin tone. To be even more daring go for a red tulle gown or a red off the shoulder dress if you want to show a bit of skin. Wear a red dress with matching red or gold earrings to complete the look.
Blue
Cobalt blue is the ultimate shade of blue and is perfect for a bold wedding guest look. Made for formal affairs, the blue wedding guest dress can be worn with some matching blue earrings and an edgy blue shoe to take things up a notch for your next wedding. Cobalt blue is best suited to those with cool skin and dark hair as well as those who have warm toned skin and light coloured hair.
Green
Green is always a good idea and can be dressed up on down in a plethora of ways. A bold shade of kelly green is perfect for those with cool coloured skin and dark hair as well as those who have an olive skin tone and light coloured hair. Opt for a green pleated cocktail dress for a summer wedding or even a beach wedding, the contrast of the bright green against a blue backdrop will be one to completely stun.
