We are declaring that yes, you can wear black to a wedding. No notes.
In all seriousness we believe that black dresses are totally acceptable to wear to any kind of wedding, from black tie to garden weddings. Black can look whimsical and frilly for a garden scene, and it can be serious and timeless for a black tie dress code. Black is versatile, it can be anything it needs to be with the right kinds of details and the right pairing of accessories.
When it comes to wearing black to a wedding, consider its possibilities. Black is a blank canvas, and a wedding is the best time to have a bit of fun with your black dress. Pairing this classic style with bold metallic jewellery and a sparkling shoe is a fun way to add a bit of glamour into your wedding guest look, especially for a black tie or formal wedding dress code. Another way to spark up a black dress is with a hefty dose of colour, and this is an ideal route take when you are off to a garden wedding. Inject your look with some brightly coloured drop earrings and maybe a gem toned jewel encrusted heel? It’s up to you!
You may be thinking, why would black ever be such a no no when it comes to weddings, let us enlighten you. Traditionally, black was considered the colour that symbolises mourning, and while it still does resemble that in some contexts, it has grown into much, much more. Black is versatile and classic, and it can make you look beyond sleek and sophisticated, and the best part apart a black dress is that it becomes a staple. You can wear it to the wedding (yes, we said!) and you can also wear it beyond the wedding, to galas, parties and that somewhat formal work dinner you have coming up. I guess the only time we wouldn’t think black would be appropriate for a wedding is if the couple asks you not to wear it, and if you are asked to not wear something to someone’s wedding then consider it bible. We know that more and more couples are sticking to a wedding guest colour palettes, so take note. Sometimes a wedding guest colour palette or dress code can be confusing if it is not clear cut such as “we ask everyone to wear blue,” or “pink wedding, ladies wear your best pink dress.” If the dress code or modern colour palette request is something starkly opposite of black, then take that as your sign. But as always if you are ever confused you can simply enquire with the bride or groom. When it comes to weddings it is always best to ask if you are unsure.
